Jubilee Parade and Welcome to President McKinley in Chicago

Chicago marked a grand Jubilee with a five division parade of veterans, dignitaries, and patriots along Michigan Avenue. The procession featured Grand Army posts, ex Confederates, the County Democracy, and Cuban War soldiers. President McKinley received a warm formal welcome at the Auditorium amid steady drizzle and large crowds.

Crowd Fills Jackson Street Reviewing Stand for President

The reviewing stand in front of the Union League club on Jackson Street drew massive crowds as the president passed, with 1,000,000 spectators along the parade route and 2,100 police to manage the throng. After the procession, the president will attend a 6:30 p.m. banquet at the Auditorium for 750 guests, with 1,500 seats.

President Attends Jubilee Ball at Auditorium

The president appeared amid a grand reception at the Auditorium last night as a military band and organ filled the hall. Mrs Potter Palmer led the reception committee with Marshall Wield behind velvet ribbons, and Mayor Harrison and Chairman Truax stood with the guest of honor. The presidential party moved to his box amid cheers, bowing to the crowd for ten minutes before leaving around midnight, followed by a parade of uniformed troops and General Miles at the entrance.

General Miles and Generals Shafter and Chantree entered to enthusiastic applause at the reception committee event. Chinese and Corean embassies and other dignitaries joined the mass meetings and jubilee ball, which netted about $25,000 for soldiers and sailors. Robbers Torture Murphys Over Hidden Money

A Cascade Iowa report states Bartley and Thomas Murphy were tortured by masked robbers trying to force disclosure of a money hiding place. They suffered severe burns on feet and stab wounds as they were dragged about the house, but no clue was found and the Murphys refused to reveal the secret. Troops are returning from Porto Rico with the Third Wisconsin and Third Illinois among the units.

Salem Illinois October 19 Dr. George H Rice was acquitted yesterday in Marion County Court on the charge of poisoning his wife after the judge instructed the jury to return a verdict. The jury complied and delivered the verdict of acquittal.
