Chicago Oct 14 President T C Loucks states that workers who faced mob violence in Atlanta were brought back to Virden. The train left Atlanta at 3 PM and reached Virden at 5 20 PM. Mr Grey of the Chicago and Alton Railroad says the conductor was directed by the troops officer.

In Springfield Illinois October 14 a mass meeting of local miners declared they would not be responsible for the safety of 106 Alabama negro miners now in Allen's hall guarded by police. Governor Tanner said he would protect the men until they leave the state. The state guards and Sons of Veterans remained in the city after the Virden mine killings. A dispatch from Alger to Tanner says the Fifth Illinois Volunteer Infantry could be ordered to assist if needed.
