Virden Riot Ends In Heavy Losses At Stockade Fight
In Virden Illinois a train carrying 200 Alabama born miners was met by armed union men at the stockade and a brutal battle followed leaving seven dead and many wounded. On a Chicago and Alton special train carrying colored miners from Virden to Springfield eight men were wounded, with William W. Carroll fatally among them.
