Canvass of Illinois vote shows Republican legislature majority

Official returns tabulated by the secretary of state show Republicans with a 62,407 lead in statewide votes and a 34 to 16 senate holdover balance, plus 81 Republicans, 71 Democrats, and 1 Prohibitionist in the house. The largest GOP statewide vote was for Augustus F Nightingale at 459,661 with Julia Holmes Smith leading Democrats.

Sousa Fails to Appear in Free Chillicothe Concert

In Columnus Ohio on November 29 Manager Robinson of the Chillicothe opera house kept the free Sousa band concert from starting after learning Sousa was in Chicago facing a lawsuit over his band. Despite his health, Sousa was not sick and refunds were issued for the free event.

Amendment Defeated in South Dakota Woman Suffrage Vote

Final returns show the amendment for woman suffrage defeated in South Dakota by a decisive majority. Governor race totals 74,000 votes. suffrage 32,000 with only 14,000 affirmative. Exact anti amendment majority recorded at 4,008.

Tax rate for 1898 higher than last year in county

The county clerk has extended the 1898 tax levy and set the rate at 8.08 per hundred dollars, up from 7.466 in 1897. The state, county, road and bridge, library, city bond interest, school corporation, and other levies are itemized, showing the total tax on the $100 rising this year.
