New York Life bookkeeper details large 1904 profit check

Milton M. Madison testified before the insurance investigating committee that in 1904 he received a 40000 dollar profit check on a Kidder, Peabody loan, cashed it, and handed the funds to vice president Geo W Perkins with no book entry. He also noted a 1901 Morgan loan of 59310 dollars credited against Hamilton's account.

Steamer A R Gos Wrecked In Lake Michigan Storm

During a fierce Lake Michigan gale the passenger steamer A R Gos of the Graham Morton line ran hard aground on the north pier at Holland Michigan. The life saving crew could not reach the vessel immediately and about thirty passengers and crew, estimated at twenty two, faced peril by the breeches buoy. Ultimately all aboard were rescued.

Train wreck near Thompsontown leaves one dead

One trainman was killed and five others injured in a rear end collision of two freight trains on the Pennsylvania Railroad at Thompsontown. The mail train plowed into the wreckage, blocking four tracks and delaying traffic for hours.

Run on Savings Bank at Keokuk

In Keokuk Iowa on November 24 a run began on the savings department of the State Central Savings Bank started by women and small depositors for no known reason. The bank is paying all callers.

Washington Nov. 24 Special reports the president appointed Herbert J. Wagerman of Roswell New Mexico as governor of New Mexico with the appointment to take effect January 22.

A fire destroyed the Decatur Milling Company plant in Decatur JIL today. The loss is estimated at $50,000.

Two Plead Guilty In County Court Larceny Case

James Rogers and Richard McLain pleaded guilty in county court yesterday afternoon to larceny. Each received forty five days in the county jail plus fines of twenty five dollars and costs. Rogers admitted stealing four pairs of pants from John Vaupel’s clothing store. McLain admitted stealing whisky from an Illinois Central car.

A reader from Belle Plaine Minnesota describes a friend’s severe hand injury that swelled and resembled blood poisoning. Bucklen’s Arnica Salve reportedly drew out the poison, with the note credited to Piet Baos at Emert’s drug store.

Local YMCA basketball season opens with two games

Tonight at the YMCA two games start a new league with a pennant awarded to the season winner. Teams are evenly matched and a hard race for first place is anticipated as fans pack the venue for the opener. Games begin at 8 o clock with 10 cents admission.

Returned Home After Chicago Trip and Murder Report

Dr. M. M. Baumgartner traveled to Chicago yesterday with Mrs. Baumgartner who witnessed the murder of Miss Reese in her apartments last Tuesday evening. Reporters followed him upon return and pressed the couple at their stopover, prompting a barricade at M. Bowers residence to protect Mrs. Baumgartner from exhaustion. He denies claims of nervous collapse alleged by Chicago papers.

Burglar At Work Targeting Mrs Barber Home

Chief Sweeney reports unknown thief entered the residence of Mrs Mary J Barber at 69 Lincoln avenue while she was away in Rockford for several weeks. The rear window was found open and the front door unlocked, with drawers rifled and items strewn about the house. The chief suspects an amateur thief with knowledge of the owner’s absence and city proximity, but no valuables were confirmed.

City council meeting yields little action at Freeport Water

Last evening the Freeport Water company meeting saw Mayor Dittmar and Aldermen Gibler Harrington Bauscher and Lonergan absent due to illness. General Manager Owen T Smith claimed the company cleared a net profit of 4400 dollars last year and warned that reducing privileges or interfering with the current schedule could harm public service.

In St Louis on November 24 Senator Burton of Kansas testified in his own defense in a trial alleging he acted as a paid attorney for a corporation in matters before a federal department. His testimony largely mirrored that given in a prior trial, detailing the same sequence of events.

Dougherty Pleads Guilty to Forgery Charges in Illinois

Peoria Ill Nov 24 Newton C Dougherty today pleaded guilty to five forgery charges and Judge Worthington sentenced him to one to fourteen years on each count. The terms run concurrently. Dougherty will be sent to Joliet tonight or tomorrow. He appeared unaffected.

Burkhart Hosts Ninth Wedding Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Burkhart entertained the ladies of the N. E. club and their husbands at their North Galena avenue home to honor their ninth wedding anniversary. Euchre prizes went to Mrs. Bamberger and Lee Gilbert, Mrs. Sage and Mr. Shroeder, Mrs. Bennetham and Mr. Bueals, with Guy Billig taking the consolation. About forty guests attended a luncheon after the games.

Suspect Held in Murder Case at Evanston Avenue

Union Traction Company offers a $1000 reward for the arrest of the killer of Miss Maude Reese, a stenographer for the company, murdered at 200 Evanston avenue.
