Ingham and Hewitt Sentenced in Stamp Conspiracy Case

Ellery P. Ingham ex US district attorney and Harvey K. Hewitt were sentenced to two years and six months in prison and fined one dollar plus costs. They faced trial for conspiracy to bribe a secret service operative amid a major revenue stamp counterfeiting plot.

Boer Casualties Reported Near Pretoria and Mafeking

Caretown reports from Pretoria place Boer casualties at about one thousand, half killed, with the race course prepared for a siege and a Maxim at the gate to prevent escapes. Mafeking dispatch says the garrison remains cheerful amid growing Boer entrenchments and constant artillery and musketry fire, soldiers living in underground shelters and deteriorating health.

Remains of Vice President Hobart Viewable in Paterson

The remains of Vice President Hobart were placed in the coffin and will be in state from 2 to 6 this afternoon in Paterson New Jersey. Public schools and most mills and factories closed to allow people to view the late official. The body was moved from the death room to the library for the public viewing.

Cranville Neil and John Sprouls, held in Jellicoe's calaboose for drunkenness, died in the jail fire that destroyed the building and nearby structures early this morning.

Woodmen announce December no assessment for 1910

Head Clerk Hawes of the Modern Woodmen states no assessment will be charged in December. This acts as a Christmas present for the Woodmen. Having skipped one assessment already this year, the total assessments will be ten. During the eighteen days of December ending Saturday evening, Hawes issued 6,055 new membership certificates and chartered seventy-nine new camps.

Automatic telegraphy test doubles distance in trials

The Pollak Virag rapid automatic telegraph system sent 122000 words per hour from the Tribune office to Milwaukee and back. Afterward it connected to Buffalo and back, over Western Union lines, at 90000 words per hour over a 1062 mile loop. Previously the furthest distance was from Buda Pesth to Berlin.

Bank Burglarized in Milton. thieves hit vault

Jangsville Wis Nov 23. It was learned this morning that the Milton bank was burglarized during the night and robbed of over 2000 dollars in cash stamps and bonds. Professionals conducted the raid. An attempted drill of the vault failed. The outer door was forced but the time lock thwarted the thieves saving 8000 to 10000 dollars in cash inside.
