Miners Round Up Chinese Laborers Near Silverton

Vancouver reports in November that miners around Silverton corralled all Chinese workers in local camps and shipped them from the district. Mongolian workers are expected to return to China by the next steamer.

Dawson Fire Rages Through City Wrecks $500,000 In Buildings

Returning Klondikers report Dawson was hit by a massive fire on October 16 lasting until dawn. The blaze destroyed forty buildings including the new post office after starting in the Green Tree saloon during a quarrel between two women Belle Mitchell reportedly hurled a lamp causing the oil to ignite. The same woman was linked to a fatal lamp incident last year and a near blaze in Third avenue a month ago.

Stewart Seeks Nevada Senate Return Despite Uncertain Vote

United States Senator Stewart of Nevada telegraphed from Carson that the Nevada legislature on joint ballot will seat forty five members the silver party has elected thirty the silver democrats two who will align with silver and the Republicans thirteen with two contests He says the silver party endorsed me for Senate and I expect a two thirds majority though Republican voting is not public knowledge He notes in 1892 he received the unanimous vote of both silver men and Republicans.

Gold Sold at a Bargain in Duquoin Ill

John Graham alias John Sharley alias Jim Wheeler of Chicago was found guilty of selling two gold bricks to John A Bowlin of Duquoin. Bowlin was one of the 101 who helped elect John M Palmer senator in 1890. Graham’s Chicago defense hired Forrest, a famed criminal lawyer, and many witnesses testified he was in Chicago on the purchase dates. The defense sought a new trial, but it is believed to be denied.

Bridgeport reports a twenty-round draw at the Horizon Athletic Club with catchweights. West out-pointed Smith and outweighed him by ten pounds, though Smith held height and reach advantages. Smith rushed often but was blocked and the bout went the distance.

Choice of Counsel Denied in Virginia Murder Case

The United States Supreme Court affirms a lower court ruling and denies habeas corpus to John Anderson, sentenced to be hanged for murdering the mate of the Olive Pierre in Norfolk, Va. The decision, announced by Chief Justice Fuller, held Anderson did not have a constitutional right to select his own counsel at trial.

Brakeman Arrested in Lieber Murder Case Near Milwaukee

Harry Dun a LaCrosse division brakeman of the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul road was arrested at Portage on suspicion of involvement in the October 3 murder of Emil Lieber in the town of Lake. Mrs Lieber identified him as one of two men who visited Lieber’s saloon without motive of robbery and killed him.

Knights of Labor From Nova Scotia to California Assemble in Chicago

Knights of Labor delegates from Nova Scotia to California arrived for Chicago’s annual convention. The session opened this morning at Odd Fellows hall on Clark Street, with estimates the gathering will last a week or ten days. In Minnesota, Thomas Canty the Democrat won the state supreme court seat over Charles J. Lewis by about 800 votes.
