Chicago dispatch reports incomplete national returns that favor McKinley with 263 electoral votes. State-by-state tallies show strong Republican gains in New England, New York, and Pennsylvania, with Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois offering large pluralities. Tennessee, North Carolina, and several Southern states lean Bryan, while California and Wisconsin tilt McKinley.
McKinley carries Baltimore by a plurality around 21,000 and leads the state overall by about 29,000 votes. The figures reflect a strong finish for McKinley in this year’s election across the city and state.
Washington reports from party headquarters show Republicans claiming 193 district results with 207 seats likely in Fifty-fifth Congress. Democrats and Populists total about 186 with 29 incomplete, while Senate figures place Democrats near a majority but not yet. Listed Republicans include Clark Curtis Henderson Updegraft Cousins Lacey Hull Hepburn Hager Deliver Perkins and many others across Iowa Illinois Indiana Michigan Wisconsin.
Major McKinley spent a quiet day at his Canton home seeking rest after days of strain. He made no speeches, reserved judgment on the election, and monitored late dispatches while visitors and delegations paused outside. Traffic of telegrams and public interest grew as electoral returns showed 263 votes, easing local anxieties. He may retreat for a few days of needed rest with Mrs. McKinley, as staff urged.
Indianapolis November 5 Chairman Martin of the Democratic state committee says the official count will decide Indiana's outcome. Early returns from about 12 of 92 counties give McKinley a 8,317 lead, Marion county would lift it to around 13,000. Martin alleges missing aggregation of Democratic and Populist votes could shrink McKinley's apparent margin, so he refuses to concede.
Chairman Gowdy states McKinley hold in Indiana at least 16 000 and not more than 23 000 in the plurality. He also says the state for McKinley by at least 25 000 and the Republican ticket is elected by a safe majority.
Bryan leads Missouri with 60 000 majority in St Louis returns indicate 81 Democrats 26 Republicans 12 Populists in the lower house and 17 Democrats 16 Republicans 1 Populist in the senate. The Globe Democrat notes 12 of 15 Congressmen elected for Missouri with Republican three from St Louis. Secretary Love says Bryan’s statewide majority around 60 000 and a Democratic state ticket average plurality near 40 000.
Detroit waits as Pingree, Michigan governor elect, extends a large lead in state results. Despite intra party opposition and railroad worker disapproval, Pingree's plurality ranges about 15 000 to 20 000 votes. Detroit Tribune reports from 67 of 84 counties show Pingree at 65 939 to McKinley 52 020.
Baltimore on November 6 reported a local Bryan group posting a telegram allegedly from Senator Gorman claiming Bryan had 229 electoral votes and was elected. A mob filled Baltimore’s main street shouting for Bryan, fearing a 1876 repeat, until early morning. Cincinnati saw thousands of Democrats marching, praising Bryan with a banner declaring election victory and warning against another 1876 repeat.
Washington reports Faulkner chairing the Democratic committee claims Bryan’s victory as votes come in. He cites states certain for Bryan and those in doubt, noting a possible 60 vote margin to reach 249 for Bryan with McKinley limited to West Virginia among doubtful wins. Topeka notes fusion victory but uncertain state results. Minnesota returns show Clough ahead for governor and McKinley leading nationwide by 20,000 to 40,000 votes.
Lincoln Neb November 5 Judge Post says the Republican state committee renounced all claims except an auditor and treasurer. He concedes Holcomb fusion for governor by about 8,000 but predicts Holcomb will exceed Bryan in the state by 3,000 to 4,000. He claims only the First and Second district congressmen.
From the Republican headquarters in Yankton 50 000 votes counted show a 2 400 lead for the party, with Chairman Elliott confident the margin will hold. Legislature appears poised to be very close on joint ballot with a possible silverite majority. 35 000 votes remain to be counted.
