Major Tie Elect Carries West North and Fast Democrats

Sufficient returns put McKinley at 284 electoral votes to 69 for Bryan with 64 in doubt. States clearly for McKinley include New York and Ohio. Bryan leads in Southern states and Idaho. Reports from Cook County place a large McKinley plurality. Wisconsin shows a large Republican lead. next House majority cited as 100 for sound money.

Claims and Estimates From The Western States In 1900

The Associated Press tallies suggest McKinley and Hobart leading nationwide as returns come in from Maine Vermont New Hampshire Massachusetts Rhode Island Connecticut New York and Pennsylvania with large Republican margins. Illinois Ohio Michigan Minnesota Wisconsin Iowa Nebraska and several Pacific states show strong McKinley gains while Southern states and many western territories tilt toward Bryan and the Democratic camp. Indianapolis reports from 140 precincts outside Marion County place McKinley at 16767, Bryan 12710, Palmer 38, others 140 with a net 1.70 percent Republican gain since 1892. A late Gowdy telegram projects a 30000 plurality and GOP victory in both legislature and U S Senate. Charles W Fairbanks notes Indiana trend favors McKinley while county results add to GOP gains. Forty more precincts in Indiana tally McKinley 8877, Bryan 6984, Palmer 23, net gain 822.

Ohio in the Next Congress Seventeen Republicans Elected

At 1 am in Columbus the returns show seventeen Republicans and two Democrats elected to Congress with two districts in doubt. Democrats MacLean and McDowell win in the Fourth and Seventeenth. Republicans Shattuck, Bramwell, Nevin, Brown, Weaver, Lybrand, Southard, Benton, Grosvenor, Watson, Kerr, Vanvorhis, Danford, Taylor, Northway, Beach, Burton win diverse districts. The state previously sent 19 Republicans and two Democrats with a Republican plurality of 137,000.

Killed While Shriving to a Fire in Wilmington

Oliver Courtney 38, son of Henry Courtney of Swift and Courtney watch makers, died at a Phoenix volunteer fire engine accident near Wilmington on November 4.
