Washington dispatch reports Gen Otis receiving Aguinaldo’s envoys who request an armistice pending Filipino congress decision and declare it the people’s wish. Manila says insurgent commissioners met Otis unsuccessfully. Otis declined to entertain terms and Aguinaldo’s direct request was not acted on. Tue Haave May 20 report: The second sitting of the peace conference lasted thirty five minutes. President Barron DeStaal read the czar and Queen Wilhelmina replies and addressed delegates on labor. The group decided not to publish the speech. The president proposed secrecy with possible press bureau communication subject to approval. Proceedings were orderly with only the president speaking.

In Janesville on May 19 the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul and the Chicago and Northwestern railways spar over a crossing. The St Paul line kept engines and box cars on the site then reinforced with 200 laborers. Northwestern attempted to lay rails at another point but was blocked. The dispute is in court and citizens tire of the feud, which flares when the crossing is raised.
Spenidererp Illinois May 19 A state convention to advance hard roads in Illinois will meet in Speninererp on Tuesday August 8 The gathering is organized by W H Moore of St Louis president of State and Interstate Good Road Improvement association supported by the Mercantile club Local district meetings to drum up interest and elect delegates have been set in Quincy Bloomington Danville Peoria Rockford Jacksonville Rock Island Charleston and Olney Secretary of Agriculture Wilson will be invited to speak The event is expected to attract many attendees and boost highway improvements Emmert and Burrell

In Exvein Illinois on May 19 the annual crow hunt ended at night with about 800 hunters tallying one thousand dead crows. Top shooter was Charles Cruneau with 54 kills as the crowd cleared the area of birds. the Kerber captaincy organized a supper for the winners.

He says the work has been seriously misapprehended and seeks to rectify the misreadings. He ends with God’s blessing on the church.
