From Wasminetox May 18 Gen Otis reports Aguinaldo representatives seek peace terms and insurgent forces scatter in the mountains. New commissioners expected twelve miles north of San Isidor where Aguinaldo fled after abandoning their capital. Otis says affairs are favorable and many inhabitants favor peace with insurgent cabinet backing. Manila May 17 Spanish prisoners say Aguinaldo has lost prestige and the rebellion is demoralized, short of food, diseased, and afraid of Americans with only Pilar and Luna still resisting.
President McKinley sends a congratulatory cable to the Russian czar on the opening of the Hague disarmament conference praising the origin and initiative of the czar. The message notes the good omen of the day and extends heartfelt congratulations.
Ex United States Senator Peffer, founder of the Populist party and longtime advocate, returns to the Republican fold amid claims of settling questions that birthed the Populist movement. Also, the Hague peace conference opens with DeBeaufort welcoming delegates and sending a telegram of gratitude to the Czar.
Mixxearouis Minn May 18 Special The 111th annual assembly of the Presbyterian church in the United States opened this morning with nearly seven hundred commissioners in attendance. Rev Dr Wallace Radcliffe of Washington retired moderator delivered the opening sermon. Recessed until 2 30 to elect moderator and organize the assembly.
At the morning session of the state Sunday school convention methods of Sunday school work were discussed. Graduating exercises of the normal class were held and 150 diplomas given.
Prof Guy Penton formerly with Baker University has accepted the presidency of Upper Town University in Fayette Iowa. The date May 18 is noted with the special announcement from Fort Scort Kas.

Lloyd Underwood, Wm Figeley, and W.H. Thayer are tasked to attend the decorations.
A crowd forming for a baseball clash between Freeport and Lexington at Taylor's park next Tuesday afternoon. Both teams have trained hard and a fair contest is anticipated. Lineups include C Stevens, Lichtenberger, Keesne, Burrell, Brady, Heard, Palmer, Munn, Selle, Farwell, Baume, Harden, Ford, Glonggin, Schroufe, Ritchie, Moogk and others from the two clubs.
Dixon Sun reports Dixon residents Billy Link and John Bullick left for Rockford and then Freeport where Link is offered Freeport park management. Joe the Turk drew huge crowds at Freeport Salvation Army meetings, with overflow crowds. A Dixon team will travel to Freeport to face the Freeport ball team next Sunday, weather permitting, featuring players from the old Dixon squad and the college team.

In Paris Illinois May 17 the circuit court recount of the Edgar County contested election case between George M Jeter and S I Headly shows Jeter the Republican candidate holds a fifteen vote majority for county judge after prior returns favored Headly by sixty eight. The recount exposes systematic alterations of results across precincts and Democrat boards in Republican precincts. A sheriff race also shifts to a small Republican plurality despite earlier Democratic victory. Thomson Taylor Spice Co introduces T and T coffee brand signaling quality.
A Salvation Army lady and a young helper will be married on the stage in a "hallelujah wedding" at the Y M C A auditorium tonight. The event is expected to draw a large audience and will be celebrated in a unique Salvation Army ceremony.
