Manila dispatch reports MacArthur's division advancing to San Fernando finding it evacuated by rebel forces except a small covering detachment. Rebels attacked surrounding outposts near San Pedro and Macat, but made no significant gains. Otis later lists San Tomas casualties including one officer and four enlisted men killed and others wounded. Lawton notes rice and sugar seized at Balung and value of Malolos subsistence at 1.5 million dollars. Luna reportedly wounded near San Tomas while Monadnock shells Paranaque.
Washington May 5 Special. The corrected form of Admiral Kautz cablegram says all is quiet at Apia Mataafa and his chiefs agreed to stay within lines set by the senior officer and myself to observe peace until the commission arrives. No further fighting is expected.
The Freeport High School graduating class, numbering over thirty, prepares for class day on Thursday June 22 and graduation the next evening at the new Grand Opera House. Goldsmiths She Stoops to Conquer will be performed with a cast led by Mrs Hardcastle plus Miss Hardcastle Miss Neville Tony Limbkin Jack Marlow and others. Officers are President Charles Runner Vice President Edith Bergman Secretary George Bruce Treasurer Clara Lathrop. The class includes noted graduates such as Helen Miller Edith Bergman Charles Runner and many others listed.
Andrew Martin Hitt a former Chicago real estate businessman and cousin of Congressman R R Hitt died in South Orange New Jersey after a three month illness of paralysis. Born in 1826 at Hagerstown Maryland he moved to Ogle County Illinois with his father later entering Chicago real estate in 1870 retiring about ten years ago. He will be buried in Mount Morris Illinois. Surviving children include Mrs EB Hopkins Jr and Mrs N W Halsey of Orange New Jersey and H H and B Hitt. He was active in Northwestern Illinois politics and a cousin of R R Hitt.
President Krueger of the Transvaal republic rejects British demands to cancel the dynamite concession claiming it does not breach the London convention. He argues the republic must judge what is best for itself and states cancellation would betray the concession partners.
The Outlook's Cape Town special reports a firmly worded British government demand to the Transvaal republic to observe obligations to the queen by ensuring peace and order. The demand accompanies a call to cancel the dynamite concession, but the scope as an ultimatum is not stated.
May 6 Curiaco Special. The Whitney Elkins Widener syndicate of New York and Philadelphia is said to finalize a plan to gain control of nearly all Chicago surface streetcar lines at an aggregate cost around 50 million dollars. Multiple conferences today ended with statements that the deal would be carried through this afternoon.
Special report from Victoria dated May 5 notes Mail Carrier Brinal undertook a perilous journey from the Stickine river to appeal to authorities for immediate relief for over 200 men stranded on the Ashcroft trail. Mule and dog meat had sustained them for weeks prior.
