Decatur May 2 former Judge Frank T D Dunn of Charleston was nominated for the supreme bench by the judicial convention at 6 oclock on the 142d ballot. The field narrowed as Philbrick Myers Thompson Johns failed to win and Dunn Curran Sherman remained. Vernon votes shifted Buckinghams 22 to Dunn triggering a landslide with Dunn 90 Curran 8 Sherman 64.
In Mattoon Illinois on May 2 a brakeman Walter Bates was robbed at midnight on a siding near Gay's station. The assailants, described as Black, took his watch public safety item and money and used threats to stop him from boarding the train. Police arrested the suspects.
Claude Jenkins a Danville student in Bloomington was killed after being ejected from a passenger train for lack of fare and attempting to board a fast freight train at Le Roy. The incident occurred while he was attending school here and reflects the peril facing travelers in the era.
