Peoria March 20 special. The Illinois Gas association opened its annual convention with a discussion on boosting the gas business in Illinois. Attendees came from Chicago Springfield Peoria Auroras Freeport Elgin and other cities. A D Mackie Peoria spoke on new business methods and W R Rhoades Springfield presented a paper on coal fuel for firing gas benches. Visitors will attend a dinner at the Creve Coeur club tonight.
Cleveland March 20 Special J P Morrissey grand master of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen said there is no truth in the report that trainmen on roads west of Chicago rejected the wage scale offered by various lines He added that a vote is being taken but results could not be decided before next Tuesday
In Bessemer Alabama on March 20 a furnace lining at Woodward collapsed during repairs. Hundreds of tons of brick and mortar buried workers and five bodies were recovered from the debris.

Mrs. Almus Baker of 105 Chestnut street left for Davenport Indiana after being informed her son Sherman Baker, a steam fitter, was severely burned at work. Telegram said condition critical and he might not survive the day. Sherman was well known in the city where he formerly resided.
Mrs LePelley of Freeport donates 1000 more to aid Carnegie's ten thousand fund. She may adjust her gift if the total isn’t reached. Mr Carroll the Democrat notes the bid and Mrs Deneen plans to contribute. Others are hoped to follow.
Pastor Thrall will give a Lenten address titled Christ's Last Saturday Night Before Calvary at the Thursday mid week service. The one hour service begins at 7 30 inviting all members and friends to attend.

In New York on March 20 Justice Fitzgerald adjourned the Thaw murder trial to Friday as Delmas and Jerome argued over testimony by Dr. Allan McLane Hamilton. Jerome offered to reveal all he knew, seeking a commission in lunacy to determine Thaw’s ability to aid his defense. The judge planned to hear testimonies on the lunacy application tomorrow afternoon.
Jacob Boehner returned from Chicago with machinery purchases for the Boehner Binder company. The equipment has begun arriving and active operations will start within a week. Boehner attended a business show in Chicago and secured many orders for loose leaf devices.

Shortly after 10 o clock last night the jury found for the defendant in the Goodwin-Standard Oil case. At 8 o’clock yesterday afternoon the defense counsel asked the case be taken from the jury and judgment rendered by the court, but Judge Heard refused. The jury had earlier returned a verdict for the plaintiff, granting him full judgment, and a new trial had been granted.
At nine last evening Miss Sarah Karcher secured an injunction preventing Ragheal the T. K. Best from erecting a wall separating the Gambiner store building and the Pelek building behind it on Chicago street. Karcher owns the building west of Best’s and the passageway used as a rear entrance to her property.
The commissioner of pensions in Washington has allowed pensions under the Feb 6 1907 act for Stephenson county veterans and widows. Names include Freeport residents Weinhold Spanogle Andre Washburne Adle man Bongye and others with monthly amounts from 12 to 20 dollars. Widows Anna E Bates Susan Kurtz receive eight and eight dollars monthly respectively. Enos Shock of Rock City gains a seventeen dollar monthly increase.
Austin Toohey born August 15 1863 Freeport son of Mr and Mrs Toohey died at Savanna Tuesday from injuries at a freight house incident Sunday. A piano being moved caused a wheel to slip and crush him at the hips during the accident. Despite surgery with Freeport surgeon Dr Stealy and Savanna physicians he died early Tuesday. He leaves two sisters Mrs J M B McCracken and Mrs McGuire. Evelyn Berry's telegram announced her brother Frank Berry died in Watsonville California. Remains will be brought to Dixon for burial. he left one brother and five sisters.

Eight individuals including William H. Shons Homer Shons and highway commissioners Shippey and Cole face grand jury indictments in a long running bridge contracts probe. One 124 page indictment carries 62 counts bail set around 6000 for Shons and similar for W H Shons. The investigation traced bid practices pooling and favoritism with witnesses noting prearranged concessions and limited competition.
