Springfield March 12 The Illinois State Board of Agriculture collected reports from the wheat belt on winter wheat damage. Damaged areas range from 15 to 59 percent, averaging 59 percent. Total seeded acres last fall were 1,479,000. if damage holds, about 682,000 acres remain for harvest, possibly the smallest Illinois crop. Even with favorable harvest, yield may reach only about 10 million bushels, insufficient for home use and seed for next year.
Washington March 12 Twe Illinois senators and representatives have named their choices for Chicago offices. Collector of customs William Penn Nixon, Postmaster Charles A Gordon, District attorney Sol Bethea, Treasurer W P Williams, Collector internal revenue F E Coyne, Pension agent Charles W Pavey, Appraiser Ex Secretary of State Pearson, Marshal L T Hoy or John James. They will back Colonel Tom Kin for commissioner of Indian affairs.
In Springfield Illinois today Colonel Rives and General Atkins led a meeting of the Chattanooga Battlefield association. They awarded a contract to Colonel J S Culver for thirty four additional regimental monuments on Missionary Ridge at the same price as the twenty four already built. A second monument may honor the twenty four Illinois regiments that did not perform direct service but were present on duty. The commission adjourned subject to the chairman's call.
Last night 75 Polanders overpowered the North Shore brewery watchman and seized the building. The gutted plant contained only cellar beer. rioters drank and fought through the night, many injured. Police sent to the scene with numerous arrests reported.
A passenger train on the Southern railway plunged sixty feet down a bluff near the Etowah river bridge in Rome Georgia. The engineer and fireman died, the baggageman and express messenger were seriously injured, two other passengers were badly bruised, and seven cars burned as heavy rains caused the trestle to give way.
