Perry Heath, formerly in charge of the Republican National Committee's Chicago literary bureau, is slated for first assistant postmaster general. Senator Mason backs Chicago Mayor Swift for second assistant postmaster general as Postmaster General Gary contemplates four year terms for presidential postmasters and variable terms for fourth class officials amid rapid changes.
The Grand Council of Illinois Royal Arch met in Streator and elected officers for the coming year including Representative to the Supreme Council Sydney Stein and grand regent Parker W. Tefft. James K. Taylor was named vice regent and Sydney Stein also serves as past grand regent. The council plans to meet next year in Rockford.
In Washington March 11 President McKinley proclaimed a new patent convention with Japan. It provides for reciprocal protection on patents trade marks and designs and is now operative.

A mass meeting of the Modern Woodmen of America was held in Clinton Iowa to investigate charges against head officers. Several hundred Woodmen from Illinois and Iowa attended as a ten member committee was named to pursue the inquiry and report. The panel questioned leaders about a $45,000 shortage in D C Zink’s accounts and disposition of Rock Island real estate.
A dynamite and powder explosion at the Rueer stone quarry office this morning killed James Madden the time keeper and demolished the office. The blast cause is not yet known.

Cattle receipts reach 9,000 with steady to higher bids. hogs at 3 75 to 3 90, sheep around 3 40 to 4 30. Freeport notes a weak demand and lower cash activity, while provisions stay firm with lard supported by English buyers.

Chicago March 11 Physicians hold hopes for Mrs Bragg recovery after a mysterious shooting at her home. She indicated knowing the assailant but would not name him. Police suspect a young man friend of Josephine Bragg and expect an arrest today. Josephine Bragg, 16, remains under arrest as she gives conflicting statements. Mrs Bragg plans to change her will and disinherit Josephine.
Washington March 11 Special The Republican senatorial steering committee met this afternoon to decide on questions about organizing committees. Over two hours of discussion produced no plan. Informal talks showed resignation had been cautiously discussed with leading Democrats and committee members, with a conviction that no effective coalition could take committee control from the Republicans.
Carter H. Harrison was nominated for mayor by acclamation at the Democratic city convention this afternoon on March 11.
News notes a death in Spring Valley of Sister M Helena a former St Marys School principal for ten years in Freeport. She was a respected educator born in Minnesota who joined St Dominic near Singinawa Mound twenty years ago and later led Spring Valley public schools. The item also notes Kling Lieber firm dissolution and a coal deal offer from H J Porter.
