Springfield March 7 A practically unanimous vote in the house approves a 2-cent maximum fare bill with a few opponents abstaining. Omaha March 7 In retaliation for Nebraska’s new 2-cent per mile passenger fare law, all railroads issue circulars abolishing reduced fares across classes effective today.
A U S circuit court upheld an order requiring non-resident witnesses to travel to St Louis and testify in the government’s case against Standard Oil and more than fifty other corporations and individuals. The suit was filed at President Roosevelt’s urging.

Mrs. Melvina Ritzman of Freeport died at her sister’s home on Galena street from a complication of diseases after three years of invalidism. Her earlier city appearances included a Republican rally at Germania opera house and state fair talks before women's meetings. She blends humor with lessons on ideal man theories and places man in a celestial order, detailing theories and methods for clear understanding.
The First M. E. choir directed by Prof. Titus, aided by top city and outside talent, performs a concert at the church on Wednesday evening March 13. Charles Saxby and a sixteen year old Bleimeier girl disappeared from Pearl City Monday evening. Authorities suspect they traveled to Wisconsin and may have wed there. A Wisconsin justice reportedly queried their ages by phone, leading to a claim of an attempted marriage. The girl’s parents have not heard from her and may pursue charges against Saxby once found.
In progress this afternoon the town primaries feature contested races for several offices. Five candidates seek the collectorship with long-time names appearing again, while two assistant supervisors will be elected among three contenders. Michael C. Steffen seeks town clerk unopposed, as does Chas Franz for assessor. Collectors include Rockey, Dean, Fahey Sr, Keogh, and Hulen. One highways commissioner will be chosen from Richter and Kuipschild.

This morning some grand jurors sent word to the sheriff that a box of cigars would be acceptable. Another suggested apples. A large sack of apples was delivered and inside the cigar parcel a lemon was found. The jurors took the joke good naturedly, but eyed the deputies as they left the jury room, hinting at possible payback.
Judge Heard will hold court at Mt Carroll tomorrow. The receiver of the German Insurance Company has several questions to bring up.
The pension department in Washington approved Charles E. Denton’s pension increase, granting him $10 monthly from February 8, 1907. Denton served as a private in Company G, 118th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. The department also notified Sadie Leeman of Orangeville that her guardianship pension for minors of James Leeman is allowed, at $8 monthly plus $2 extra from April 19, 1906.
