Special reports Gen Otis plans a grand onslaught within a fortnight to deprive insurgents of offensive power. American troops grow restless under Filipino sharpshooting and will clear jungles near Manila with reinforcements. The president names F H Wines census official and G W Haylett Navajo agency agent. War department beef charges court inquiry adjourns to Chicago to inspect packing plants.
The Manila special reports Filipinos attacked a water works six miles from Manila. The assault failed with 17 rebels killed and many wounded. The Second Oregon and First Nebraska engaged. two Americans wounded. Gen Otis reports 12 deaths since Feb 26, including six from smallpox and three from wounds.
James Ryan, a well known Northwestern road conductor, was struck by train No. 14 in West Chicago Friday night and killed. The 88 year old, formerly of Belvidere, lived in West Chicago and was among the most popular railroad men in the service. His sisters found his body on the sidewalk after the accident.
About fifty corpses were recovered from the scene of the powder magazine explosion near Towton. Debris contain the remains of several others. Rumor says a persecuted soldier, seeking vengeance, may have caused the blast.
In Cuarteston West Virginia March 6 special reports Rev Odell former chaplain of the Third Illinois outlined his experience at Porto Rico and charged General Grant with incompetency and neglect also mentioning embalmed beef General Miles said he could corroborate if needed The city remains flooded with the river falling three feet and five thousand residents evacuated unable to return for days
In Burcomington Illinois on March 6 Mrs. Fliza A Stephenson mother of Adlai E Stephenson former vice president of the United States died this morning.
New York reports the death this morning of Rudyard Kipling the novelist poet and journalist Josephine Kipling wife of Rudyard Kipling confirmed the sorrowful loss. The family notes Kipling continues to improve after the illness.
In Rome on March 6 a special bulletin stated the Pope’s health is very satisfactory. No further bulletin will be released until tomorrow morning.
S. S. Jourden will go east tomorrow to buy goods for the firm of Jourden and Stuckenberg.

The city council will hold its regular monthly session this evening, with agenda items to be considered in public meeting format.
The Columbus club will hold a meeting Wednesday evening. A delegation from John A. Davis post G A R attended the funeral of Conrad Galvin on Sunday. George Long was arrested Saturday night on a charge of whipping his wife and faces trial this afternoon.

Freeport printers are invited to Germania hall this evening to perfect an organization. A goodly number work in Freeport with the Journal alone employing twenty such workers.
Mrs Frank Raubenheimer sustained a spinal injury after slipping in the cellar way of her Union Street residence yesterday morning. She remained unconscious for several hours before medical staff responded, with Dr Fair summoned to care for her.
Doctor Carver, famed horseman, will arrive from Spokane Washington next week after spending winter at Taylor’s Park. He owns sixteen horses wintered there and plans to begin active training at Freeport, taking over the training stable recently vacated by M E McHenry.
Local plans stir as Wisconsin and Missouri intercollegiate debaters may visit Freeport for a forthcoming event. John J. Coyle and other Freeport students at Wisconsin push for hosting and the arrangements committee will meet locals soon. Question of Light presents a petition to the city council asking to replace arc electric lights on Upper Stephenson street with the same lighting as Freeport. Petition cites heavy foliage making arc lights worthless in summer and other reasons for the switch. Council may act tonight or refer to the light committee for report. Stockholders of the Driving Park association met on Saturday evening and selected June 27, 28, and 29 for the spring race meeting at Taylor's Driving Park. The association also set aside $16,000 in stake money for the races. Martha Washington garrison meets tonight.
T. H. Hollister takes over as jeweler and optician succeeding A. V. Hart in the local shop. Community notices confirm continuity of service and preservation of established trade.
