Washington hears unconfirmed rumors that Capt Phillips commanding the battleship Texas was killed by a Spanish shell during the Santiago bombardment. The report has caused sadness in naval circles as Phillips was regarded among the bravest US navy officers.
The semi official notice reports the American navy under Admiral Sampson attacking Santiago de Cuba on Monday. The assault led to heavy Spanish losses estimated at 1,500 men, and the Reina Mercedes cruiser was sunk by American torpedo boats. Five sailors and twenty-nine marines aboard were killed.
Portland reports June 7 with early returns from 25 of 32 counties showing Geer Republican governor about 10 000 ahead Moody Republican in the second district near 5 000 Tongue Republican holds first district seat by over 2 000. Legislature leans GOP with 43 Senate Republicans and 44 House Republicans to 7 and 16 opposed respectively. Portland mayor Geer leads, Mason elected mayor by 1 500.
A large reception hosted by Mrs. E L Cronkrite at the Cronkrite home on upper Stephenson Street drew hundreds of invitations with few regrets. Guests enjoyed pink and white decorations with carna tions and roses, assisted by Mrs. Ruston, Mrs. Rodearmel, Mrs. Byerly and Mrs. Whiteside. An afternoon of refreshments and social games followed, with Miss Nellie Best and others aiding in the dining room. Another reception by Mrs. H D Funk for church young people featured about thirty attendees, lively social games, music, and refreshments, with numerous young women and men listed among attendees.
Chicago forecast calls for partly cloudy skies tonight and Thursday with scattered showers this afternoon and tonight. Chicago also notes variable winds. In Cincinnati the Social Democracy convention focused on committee reports and a general clearing up of formal and preliminary business today.
A Kingston Jamaica special says Spanish cruiser Vizcaya and torpedo boat destroyer Furor were badly damaged during the bombardment of Santiago and its defenses Monday. A Brooklyn shell burst under Vizcaya port quarter, dismounting a gun, injuring the rudder and wounding several sailors.
Judge Julius B. Grinnell, renowned prosecuting attorney in the anarchist trials, died suddenly today in Curiaco after a long career in law and public service. His demise shocks the legal community and detours upcoming court schedules.

The auxiliary cruiser St. Paul departed New York today at noon under sealed orders. Special dispatch notes the voyage commenced with secrecy.
