Sampson to Lead Strong Fleet to Spain

Washington reports Admiral Sampson will be detached from Santiago command to lead the eastern squadron with Watson succeeding him. Secretary Long denies abandonment of the Watson expedition, stating it is deferred rather than canceled and will sail to Spain when Porto Rico campaign allows. President McKinley also proclaims postal service to Santiago and other Spanish possessions using U S stamps in domestic traffic.

Miles Sets Sail for Porto Rico with Convoy

At 2 am orders were issued to Sampson to supply a convoy for the Miles expedition. Gen Miles plans to sail for Porto Rico at 3 pm with warships Massachusetts Dixy Gloucester Cincinnati Annapolis Linden and Wasp. Secretary Alger says Santiago troops stay in Cuba until yellow fever is gone.

Expedition sails from Cuarneston to Porto Rico

A 4000 strong force under Major General J H Wilson begins its voyage from Cuarneston at 7 pm aboard transports Grand Duchess and No 30. Second and Third Wisconsin, Sixteenth Pennsylvania, and two Sixth Illinois companies form the First brigade of the First division of the First army corps.

Washington July 21 Special reports an authoritative declaration that if Porto Rico is captured it would be held as a permanent possession of the United States as a prize of war. Rockford Visitors Tour Galena Exposition and Places of Interest

Child Beheaded by Reaper On Wisconsin Farm
