Sunday schools dominated attendance at the Rock River Assembly in Dixon Illinois with free admission for credentialed children. Lectures on astronomy by Dr. E L Eaton and a Colorado California talk by Rev C O Heisler framed a day of oratory and athletic preliminaries with thirty plus northern Illinois schools represented in contests.
Milwaukee delegates in Denver's contention for the 1898 Baptist Young People's convention. At exposition hall the session drew a large crowd and Minneapolis Baptists, about 300 strong, were active but conceded the race at noon. Managers decided Denver as the convention site with officer elections due that evening.
In Cleveland Ohio on July 17 a life saving crew recovered fifteen bodies after a ferry boat capsized near Whisky Island last night. At noon three bodies remained missing as the search continued.

Kansas City July 17. The executive committee of the American party tendered the nomination for governor to Hon. John B. Stone presiding judge of Jackson county court. He accepted in a brief letter. The nomination was made without formal convention.
Hallett & Davis, piano and organ dealers in Chicago, have failed and assigned to George Aldrich. Assets are 288000 dollars with liabilities of 140000. Slow collections blamed for the collapse.
New York July 17 Special. At ten o clock this morning the bulletin stated Cornelius Vanderbilt passed a quiet night and is much refreshed by sleep. His condition is improved.
