The store runs a semi annual clearing sale in the dry goods department with many items deeply discounted. Shirt waists and wash goods are offered at significant reductions and corsets are priced unusually low. Sale continues until Saturday, July 24, with many other lines included and prices listed in daily papers.
Grocery department announces a midweek sale for Wednesday to Friday featuring New potatoes at 19c per peck, Armour’s Woodchuck soap 12 bars for 25c, Babbitt’s soap 8 bars for 25c, cooking butter 44c per lb, sugar 18 lbs for 1, white satin flour 1.15 per sack, sardines and oils, condiments, and fresh coconut. Includes dried beef 1 lb for 18c and various pantry staples. Big bottle raspberry phosphate and other fine items promoted.
The Detroit convention opened at 10 45 am with rules patterned after the fifty third congress and full vote by delegations. Leading presidential hopefuls Crawford Fleitz Higgins Omaha and Kanena City seek the next gathering. Platform backs McKinley administration and monetary moves, Hawaii annexation, Cuban war policy, and labor wages. Location committee favors Omaha for the next convention.

Henley regatta heats began with Leander defeating Thames and Trinity Hall beating London in the grand challenge cup. Diamond Sculls saw Dr W S McDowell of Delaware Boat Club Chicago beat Hon E A Guinness of Thames by a length in 9 10 15. Stewards’ trial for the challenge cup featured Winnipeg Rowing Club over Utrecht University Boat Club Triton.
The Melzingah reservoir in the Fishkill mountains near Matteawan burst at 8 am after heavy rains. Water swept into the creek and two miles downstream near Duchess junction washed away brick yards and laborer housing. Nine people are reported dead with others missing.
Word from miners headquarters reports Aurora workers striking this morning and organizers being sent. In Jackson county ten mining companies posted notices agreeing to pay the miners scale, signaling a broader labor action in the Fairmont region.

Miss Kate Manny of North Galena avenue narrowly escaped death when she stepped onto the street in front of a slow moving street car. Motorman McCarty and Conductor Hawke halted, the motorman grabbed her before she was under the wheels, and she fainted from fright. Doctors Buckley and Stealy found no broken bones and she was taken home.
A sign on the Goldsmith clothing shop door announces it is closed for invoice and indicates a possible sale later. In Ravenswood Illinois, Mr Orville G Merrifield reports the arrival of a nine pound baby girl last Monday with mother and child doing well.
Free Pilla N Hazelwood of Buffalo is at Em mett Burrell's drug store today giving out samples of Doan's celebrated kidney pills. The Cycling club plans a run this evening to Washburn's to attend the ice credit social, with all members asked to be at the club room by 7:30.
The Martha Washington garrison of Eminent Ladies hosts a trolley party at 7 30 this evening followed by a reception at the Knights of the Globe hall. All friends of the order are invited.
The Silver Creek literary society will stage a picnic on Saturday July 17 at Philip Bardell’s woods two miles east of Freeport or one mile west of the Yellow Creek brewery. All friends are cordially invited.
