Senate Debate Over Silver Payment Plan Continues

Interstate Commerce ruling on grain rate differentials

The Interstate Commerce Commission, in an opinion by Chairman Knapp, held that distances by shortest available routes should base grain rate differentials from the same shipment points to Milwaukee and Minneapolis. A navy dispatch from the Marine commander says general interest greeted the Maine in Havana harbor but no demonstrations occurred. He went ashore several times and was treated with great courtesy.

The Senate in executive session confirmed the nomination of George T. Roberts of Iowa to be director of the Mint. The confirmation took place in Washington on January 27.

Earthquake Rocks Helena With Three Severe Shocks

Helena Ark January 27 1900s city awoke to a severe earthquake lasting under half a minute with three distinct tremors. Buildings shuddered and residents fled from a prayer meeting as booms of noise echoed. Telephones reported the quake felt across surrounding areas.

Central Mattress Manufacturers Association Formed in Indianapolis

Thirty-one mattress makers representing factories from Pittsburgh to St. Louis north of the Ohio River met in Indianapolis and organized the Central Mattress Manufacturers' Association to regulate prices on all mattress lines and reduce harsh competition. Officers elected: President G. A. Wisher of Petersburg, secretary and treasurer C. C. Nichols of Cincinnati.

City of Duluth Reported Stranded Off St Joseph Bar

Chicago January 27 The steamer City of Duluth is reported stuck on the bar off St Joseph Michigan and pounding heavily. The latest report says the vessel may be destroyed and the St Joseph life saving crew prepared to throw lines to reach the crew ashore. The ship carried no passengers and a crew of about twenty five men. Barge and crew sink off Barnegat in gale

A barge named Yonkers sank near Barnegat while towed by the Walter A Luckenback from Newport News toward Providence Rhode Island. Four men were aboard the barge when it went down in the storm.

Miners Win Eight Hour Day and 10 Cent Advance Pact

The interstate coal operators and miners convention in Chicago ends with miners securing an eight hour day and a 10 cent per ton wage advance for nearly 200 000 soft coal workers. The agreement bases pay on run as screened coal with a uniform price system and sets annual meetings to fix the scale, with Pittsburg chosen for the next gathering. Three mill superintendents offered to travel to England

New Bedford reports three mill superintendents are summoned on short notice to buy yarn in Ireland for the striking mill, enabling cloth production without spinners. In Springfield, Colonel J N C Shumway, manager of Taylorville Coal Mining, agrees to pay the Springfield scale, and miners plan to return to work today.

Michigan mining report notes higher wages and output

Labor Commissioner Cox reported from Lansing that George Wagner collected mine statistics for the upper peninsula. Wages rose 10 to 16 percent, copper miners earned more than iron workers, and despite limited iron mine activity the state’s output reached record levels with hopes of 10,000,000 tons in 1898. The royalty system is blamed for depressing wages and hindering development. Madrid and Washington dispatches describe the Spanish battleship Vizcaya, 7,000 tons, set to visit American ports and its formidable specs and armament.

Revenue bill amendments shape tax liens and corporate value

The legislature adopted amendments to the revenue bill delaying tax liens to May 1, granting the state board of equalization power to raise corporate assessments but not lower them, and to value capital and franchises above tangible property. Indianapolis January reports a two day Monetary Convention adjourned swiftly after endorsing the Commission’s plan for currency reform. Delegates, led by New York merchants and eastern figures, backed a gold standard course while warning Congress to accept changes. Spadards Retreated After Spanish Fire in Cuban Skirmish

In January 27 dispatches, insurgent positions near Nek were shelled by Spanish artillery. Casualties were reported as many buried and wounded as Spanish forces pressed coastal defenses and captured a plantation.
