Disaster Fires East St Louis Grain Elevator and Freight House
A massive blaze destroyed the Union elevator in East St Louis and the adjacent Stirlington freight house, causing estimated losses around 1,000,000 with 1,250,000 bushels of corn and other cargo burned.
