Visitor speaks warmly of a tonic called I. and B. Comp'd Syrup Sarsaparilla as the best blood purifier and liver stomach remedy. He claims it cures headache constipation and beautifies the complexion and notes many friends have used it with high praise.
The product E. and B. Tolu Tar and Wild Cherry is marketed as a superior remedy for coughs colds hoarseness and lung affections. It is described as pleasant and effective and available wholesale and retail.
Washington January 23 Special After routine business Senator White Cal spoke on the West anti expansion resolution and on Bacon's resolution for Philippine liberty He quoted Supreme Court passages McKinley Atlanta address and Dewey report to claim Filipinos fit for self government He avoided legal discussion and noted the futility of consensus. Executive session followed at 2 p.m. House debated polygamy ban and DC business District of Columbia matters were then addressed. State department said no further Apia advices until late next week President McKinley and party took Sylph for a river outing.
The Dwight Place Congregation in New Haven unanimously voted to call Rev Dr W W Leete of Rockford Illinois. Leete, 43, educated at Amherst class of 77 and Yale Theological class of 80, attended Governor Lounsbury’s inauguration and preached at Dwight Place. He is a moderator of Illinois state conference and a director of the Home Mission Association of Illinois.
In Rockford on January 21 the street car company that owns the entire line announced plans for an electric line to Belvidere via Blackhawk Springs, a summer resort. The firm says construction could start in spring, expanding service beyond the existing Chicago and North Western route. Many Belvidere factory workers reside in Rockford and commute daily, supporting the project.
In Blarkspera Pa on January 23 the senatorial ballot produced no winner as Quay led with 638 of 1,161 votes cast while Paired had 98 absent without pairs. Cironceston W Va and Helena Mont also reported no decisive results, and Dover Del noted the ninth joint ballot yielded no election in the senator race.
Denver reports hundreds of cattlemen arriving for the second annual convention of the national live stock association opening tomorrow. Forty five organized blockies from twenty states, including Illinois and South Dakota, are affiliated with the national body.
Dixon Hl Jan 21 The city council refused to grant franchises to either telephone company in town. The Central Union's franchise expired two years ago enabling Lee County Telephone to begin service and cut rates. Since then subscribers enjoyed free phones at times.
B F Brubaker, former city chief of police now a Sea Board Air Line detective, nabbed thieves who robbed a Southern tour party in Atlanta. He chased suspects to New Orleans, securing a gold watch and diamonds and revealing two other accomplices. The raid boosts Brubaker’s standing as a top southern detective. A later note touts Royal Baking Powder purity and safety, while small local notices list births and a 35 cent Rocky Mountain Tea.
The Shakespeare society will meet with Mrs. Hettinger this evening. Miss Louise Entors has returned to work at Brinkman's after an illness. A special meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary will be held tomorrow at 8 o'clock in the Y M C A parlor.
