Dam Collapse Threatens Wilson Avenue Bridge and Mills

Carevetann, O., Jan. 18 Special. A section of the dam under the Wilson avenue bridge failed this morning, sparing thirty workmen by a narrow margin. The backed water stretches a mile and a half, hundreds of feet wide and 25 to 30 feet deep, with embankments melting into the flood. The raging torrent has damaged mills and plants on the flats below, including Standard Oil, Cleveland Paper, and Flick slaughter houses, and the Wilson avenue bridge is likely a total loss.

Fire breaks out at Wheeler mine in New Catrwe Colo

Special report from New Catrwe Colorado says the Wheeler mine caught fire just after night shift began. Alarm sounded and miners rushed to escape as deadly fumes filled the entrance. Ten men were working beyond the blaze and unaccounted for, but later reports say all miners inside escaped and the fire is confined to one room.

Protective Legislation Moves Through Illinois Legislature

In Sprinameto Illinois on January 17 Senator Juul will push a bill letting plaintiffs assign their injury claims to their attorneys, who may then settle claims. A companion measure in the House by Representative Craig imposes attorney liens on all damages judgments and decrees. Craig also seeks to restrict district mutual wind insurance to the company’s formation district and to cities under 12 000 population. In Sprinerietp the next day, 58 bills were introduced covering varied topics, from volunteer pay to cigarette bans, labor import prohibitions, free public employment offices, waterworks purchases, and property assessment timing, with adjournment noted and governor appointments confirmed.

Negotiations have been ongoing for two to three years to purchase the Aurora line extending north to Batavia. Survey work on a Aurora to Yorkville extension of about twelve to fourteen miles will start immediately, with a possible further line to Morris via Lisbon and potentially Ottawa. Major Gamble has conducted the surveys. one new line would be the Aurora Yorkville Morris Railway.
