Ex governor John D Long and Senator John Sherman meet with McKinley in Canton while Burrows and others confer. Long leaves without a offer though he says he would consider a war or navy post if offered. Sherman announces he has accepted the state portfolio. Alger question left unresolved as talks continue.
Senator John Sherman, soon to be secretary of state, said the McKinley administration will not interfere in the Cuban war and aims for reforms giving Cubans practical autonomy. He and Senator Burrows noted a tariff bill will be the first item after Congress reconvenes on March 18.
Springfield January 16 A new senatorial candidate emerges as Representative A J Hopkins of Aurora announces his bid to succeed John M Palmer. Hopkins will leave Washington for Springfield with I L Ellwood DeKalb named campaign manager. Friends say factions may unite behind Hopkins while other contenders Lorimer Allerton Hitt Carr forecast success on various ballots.
