Free Homestead Bill Debate and Oleomargarine Law Passage

Washington, Jan 15. The House debated the great bill to subject oleomargarine and imitation dairy products to state laws as transported and stored therein. Supporters argued states need police power to regulate false dairy substitutes. opponents warned of dangerous federal overreach in Interstate commerce. Cannon and Henderson clashed over motives, Henderson defending fair play against deceptive practices by Chicago and Kansas City interests.

Senate frees public lands to settlement from Indians

The senate passed the free homestead bill opening all Indian lands to settlement with no government payment beyond minor office fees. Estimated at 38,252,641 acres worth 35.34 million, the lands are largely arid and debtors faced payments. The bill, initially Oklahoma-only in the house, expands to all Indian lands in the senate. Illinois Senate in ten minute session prompts new committees

Springfield Jan 15 A ten minute senate session saw several bills introduced including creating a board of pardons and funding for the Omaha exposition.
