The Freeport Water Company announces semi annual water rents due January 1, 1898 at the water office over the post office. If paid by that date a ten percent discount is allowed. All consumers urged to take advantage of the offer.
Public notice states the Stephenson County court has rendered judgment for a special tax on property benefiting on Exchange Adams Me chanic Chicago Van Buren streets and North Galena avenue with brick. County court of Stephenson county Illinois has issued judgments for special taxes on brick paving Adams Carroll and Williams streets. Call the collector at Fry's block room 8 for payment within days. A downtown Italian fruit stand owner was targeted by two con artists in a banko style scam. One eye con men dropped a glass eye among fruit to trigger a search, then swapped tales and money promises. The ruse ended with the Italian paying $50 to recover the eye and learning no $100 payoff existed. police were notified.

In Chicago on January 6 Edward M. Hunt ex-deputy sheriff was shot and killed by W. Ray Smith a bailiff in Judge Hortons court and nephew of the judge after a quarrel over a small debt. Hunt sprang from behind a building and fired first with a ice cream brick used as a shield Smith returned fire wounding Hunt who died minutes later Smith was injured in the left hand and right leg and gave himself up to police
A rear end collision near Copemish with a Toledo bound freight crashing into a Manistee and Northern engine, leaving the latter wrecked and injuring crew. Conductor Jones reportedly dying. Engineer Ritzell and Fireman Breotl seriously hurt. authorities respond as reports cross state lines.
