A downtown Italian fruit stand owner was targeted by two con artists in a banko style scam. One eye con men dropped a glass eye among fruit to trigger a search, then swapped tales and money promises. The ruse ended with the Italian paying $50 to recover the eye and learning no $100 payoff existed. police were notified.

Court Bailiff Shoots to Death a Man in Chicago

In Chicago on January 6 Edward M. Hunt ex-deputy sheriff was shot and killed by W. Ray Smith a bailiff in Judge Hortons court and nephew of the judge after a quarrel over a small debt. Hunt sprang from behind a building and fired first with a ice cream brick used as a shield Smith returned fire wounding Hunt who died minutes later Smith was injured in the left hand and right leg and gave himself up to police
