Port Arthur Falls as Japanese Take Forts

Japanese forces seized several forts at Port Arthur today. Russian officers and officials may be paroled and return to Russia with side arms. the garrison rank and file are to be transported to Japan. General Stoessel asked the emperor for parole for the officers.

A rumor from Vilna claimed an attempt on Emperor Nicholas II's life, but later Associated Press denial notes no details or confirmation. The report stated the emperor passed Minsk, 465 miles west of Moscow, with no verified details.

Fly Wheel Burst Destroys Mill In Pittsburgh Area

A fifty ton fly wheel exploded at the National Tube works near McKeesport today, wrecking the mill. One man was killed and four injured seriously. The loss is valued at about 100,000 dollars. Around eight hundred men lose temporary employment.

Supreme court reverses liquor case on commerce clause

Wasmerton Jan 3 Special The supreme court reversed a Town supreme court ruling in two cases on Iowa prohibitory liquor law construction. In American Express Co. v State of Iowa packages of liquor sent C O D from Rock Island to Tama were seized and ordered destroyed. The reversal cites conflict with interstate commerce clause.

Girl Ten Years Old Dies of Diphtheria

Meta Neumann ten year old daughter of Mr and Mrs William Neumann of 136 Garden Street died yesterday at 1 20 pm after a three day illness of diphtheria. She had prior lung troubles but no serious illness. Parents noticed Sunday she felt unwell and medical aid was sought only when condition worsened. Funeral held this afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev A C Landek officiating.

Robbery at Rodemeyer’s Saloon Puzzles Police

A Sunday afternoon break in at Fred Rodemeyer’s Galena Street saloon saw the proprietor lose $25, a box of ten cigars, and several drinks from a thief who appears to have known the layout. The burglar entered via a cellar route, unlocked doors, and vanished with no trace. Police are pursuing the case.

Fire Record of 1904 Reveals High Alarm Volume and Loss

Chief Fire Marshal John I Rodemeyer reports 1904 saw 90 alarms the most since the paid department began. Total fire loss was 15097.25 dollars with three major blazes. The Adams Street court house burns caused 3000 dollars loss. Fry's Block fire damaged stock and offices for about 6000. Natural Carbon By-Products plant in East Freeport lost 2000. Other fires ranged down to 300 dollars. Also aided by Philip Schiller farm blaze saving several buildings with about 2000 loss. Hose length 24650 feet, 61 hours work, 74 miles traveled by Hose No 1, 77 by Hook and Ladder, and 84 by Hose No 2. Monthly fires listed, plus 309 patient admissions at St Vincent’s Orphan Home total 436, with 354 discharged and 34 died.
