Miss Frances Willard collapsed after her Janesville speech to about three thousand listeners. The 77 year old reformer, born in Janesville, was helped from the platform and transported to a cousin’s home where she would stay to recover. Her secretary worried about press disclosure as Willard regained strength but appeared seriously ill.
Dawes of Illinois assumed the office of comptroller of currency at Wastuxatoy D C with the day’s ceremony. N B Scott of West Virginia began duties as commissioner of internal revenue. The president learned of Mason’s election as Ohio house speaker and discussed Hanna’s candidacy with several congressmen. Assistant Secretary Day returned this morning.
The Canton report notes a denial of substituting the name for Hanna as a senate candidate and asserts Hanna would likely win despite Mason’s election. Secretary Gage backs the money commission as a cure for national finances and hopes for legislative action. Mrs. Joe Brown hosts a New Year’s Eve gathering with friends, games, and supper.
Commans Jan 8 Special reports that Hanna men may align with gold Democrats to back Calvin S Brice rather than elect McKisson and Bushnell as silver Republicans. The house chose Mason as speaker 56 to 63 over Hanna’s Boxwell, Democrats hold senate 2 vote majority and officers. Mason expected to wield patronage against Hanna with state executive also aligned, making Hanna’s defeat likely unless a radical change occurs within a week.

At Union Stock Yards hog numbers reach 26,000 with prices rising for light to heavy. cattle 14,500 with gains. beef steady to high. stockers and feeders 3.25 to 4.25. sheep 19,000 and lambs steady or weaker.
At Germania opera house on a January night, Murray and Murphy present McFadden's Reception, an Irish American farce with an 28 member all star company. Mrs Eliza Kauffman died at her son in law Wim Koehler's Jefferson street home at 2 15 AM, born in 1881 in Pennsylvania and residing in Freeport for 4 ½ years. Miss Gardeina Graalman, born Germany May 1859, died after tumor removal. she was a faithful member of the German Reform church of Ridott township. Mrs Hannah Paul died New Year’s morning at 6 45 of lung fever, age 72. funeral held at the family home. Elmer J Smith, former Illinois Central fireman now in Freeport, died in Loudon Pennsylvania. buried Sunday. Mrs Augusta Saeger died of neuralgia of the heart at 6 30 AM. funeral at 9 30 AM from home and 10 AM at St John’s church. John Gitz of Florence township died after cancer of the stomach. born Germany 1829. survived by wife and four children. funeral Wednesday at 11 AM from Oak Street Evangelical church.
