President's New Year reception at White House draws crowd

Washington January 2. President and Mrs Roosevelt hosted a brilliant New Year’s reception at the White House attended by about 500 persons including diplomats, military officers and government representatives. A 10 year old boy with soiled hands and a girl with a teddy bear drew laughs as Roosevelt greeted guests. Receptions continued at other homes including that of Vice President Fairbanks and Speaker Cannon’s daughter Helen Cannon.

Mark Twain's Merry Funeral in 1906

New York on January 2 reports Mark Twain held a merry funeral at his Fifth Avenue home attended by relatives and about twenty literary contemporaries. A stage was set in the drawing room where Twain appeared in grotesque Siamese twin costume and joked about his double personality.
