Thaw Trial Lags in Cross Examination

In New York on February 28 the Thaw trial began with only fifty spectators in court. Jerome spent the morning cross examining Dr. Evans, the defense alienist, about Thaw letters admitted as evidence. Dr. Hwang testified the writer was insane at the time but not permanently. The lengthy cross-examination may prevent the defense from finishing its case this week.

Preacher Dies in Wisconsin Visit Echoes Local Ties

The Rev Burnett Vogelsang died of typhoid pneumonia in Elkhart Lake Wisconsin yesterday. He had visited Freeport often and was once married here to Bertha Severing daughter of Rev N Severing. Remains arrive Saturday at 1 50 PM by Milwaukee Road. burial in City cemetery. Funeral arrangements handled by G A Huenkemeier.

Death of Henry W. Brown at 65 in Rockford

Mrs Tha Craig reports the death of her father Henry W. Brown who died yesterday at his Rockford home. A 65-year-old Rockford resident for forty years, he came from Beloit township where he was born. He leaves a widow, nine children and twenty two grandchildren. He enlisted in the Seventy second Illinois volunteers in 1864, served as hospital service head for the regiment, and remained with them to the end of the Civil War.

The Republican voters of Buckeye Town will caucus at the town house on Friday March 15 1907 from 1 30 to 3 p m to nominate a township ticket. Committeeman Br W Clingman serves as organizer.

Inquest on Great Western Wreck Delves Into Sober Crew

The German Valley coroner's inquest into the Chicago Great Western wreck continued, with widow Mrs. Ellen Cline testifying that her husband Engineer Martin Cline never drank in his life. Fireman Brumble and Rev. Lerch offered conflicting accounts as witnesses described the cab's sobriety and the events of the crash. The proceedings, amid sympathy for the widow and tension toward Lerch, are expected to last several days with more fatalities to be examined.

Inquest Hears Fireman Brumble On German Valley Signal

Fireman Brumble testified about not seeing signals at German Valley the night of the wreck saying the weather was fierce. He defended engineer Mr Cline as competent and reliable while noting orders to slow for German Valley and the sidetrack may have been forgotten. Conductor Kennedy described a hot box causing delays at Forest Home Stillman Valley and Byron with tine losses.

Freeport Gas Light to Add Brick Extension and Cut Bills

Freeport Gas Light and Coke plans a thirty foot brick steel addition west of the retort house to raise capacity by sixty percent and accommodate eighteen retorts. Bids from carpenters masons and iron workers in Freeport and nearby cities expected this week with contracts to be let early next week. The company has issued a six percent discount on bills paid at the office and will offer ten day payment with discount, effective March first for February bills, with the office open only on Saturday and Monday evenings.

The funeral for Frederick W. Metz, who died at St Francis hospital last Tuesday afternoon, was held this morning from his home six miles northwest of the city. Interment followed at Cedarville Cemetery.

Father seeks damages after Pearl City wreck inquiry set

Daniel B. Kuntz, administrator of the late Mr. Kuntz, asks for his son’s effects to be sent to Stoysburg Pa and inquires about an inquest for the Pearl City Great Western wreck. He intends to sue for damages against the Great Western road. The coroner says the inquest will be held next Monday or Tuesday.

In Belvidere on February 27 the will of the late John W. Murphy disposing of about 226000 dollars was filed for probate. It leaves all property to his only child Mrs Creoroe Meyers of Spring and designates her as executor of the will.
