Reed Smoot Defends Monogamy Before Senate

Senator Reed Smoot addressed the Senate defending Mormon loyalty and denouncing polygamy. He said he has only one wife, explained the 1890 manifesto ending plural marriages, and noted prosecutions for new polygamous unions should occur. Smoot cited church and legal history showing polygamy ended and few cases since, while stressing ongoing obedience to the manifesto.

Mrs Nesbit Thaw Testifies In Thaw Trial On Letters

Evelyn Nesbit Thaw testified as the first witness in the Thaw trial. She identified forty two letters by White and described his studies as sanctuaries of debauchery. She recalled May McKenzie relaying White’s claim the Thaws would not last and Thaw would regain his wife. She spoke of an operation paid by Thaw and White’s influence on Thaw's nerves when the subject arose. Jerome cross examined witnesses and explored the Trip to Europe and the Hotel Cumberland episode.
