Grand jury returns joint indictment against representatives of major Cincinnati coal companies for conspiracy in restraint of trade. Indictment names over twenty individuals and alleges efforts to restrict trade in the industry.
George B. McClellan today took the oath of office as mayor of New York City for a four year term. The ceremony occurred in New York on December 27, with Special dispatches confirming the inauguration.
Washington dispatch reports the gunboat Dubuque departed Porto Plata in San Domingo for Monte Christi. No further details were provided by the Navy Department.
President Roosevelt departed Washington for Pine Knob Virginia at 11 30 today in a special travel announcement. He is en route to Virginia for unspecified engagements proceeding on schedule.

John C. McCall testified in New York Life Insurance Company investigations stating Andrew Hamilton was ill in France and could not leave for two months. Memphis Tenn December 27 special The Merchants Trust company along with the American Savings Bank Trust company and the Mechanics Saving bank suspended business A receiver was appointed for Merchants Trust which has 200000 capital The bank owed depositors 605000 according to a statement The suspension stemmed from over loans on discounts One director told Associated Press the three institutions had ample assets and could pay dollar for dollar The suspensions caused little excitement in financial circles.

Mrs. George Elvey of Fifth Avenue receives notice that William V. Gardner died at his Chicago home this morning. He was about fifty, formerly lived in Freeport, and worked as a bookkeeper at Walton Nephews' dry goods. Survived by wife two sons mother two brothers and three sisters

Henry Hartman a 50 year old farmer from Lancaster township disappeared yesterday morning from his two mile north east of Freeport home near the C M and St Paul tracks. Searching parties of about 100 farmers scoured miles without result with his mental state described as unbalanced and melancholia. His wife and friends attempted care with no effect and tracks were found last night near the railroad crossing but led nowhere. He is father of Mrs. Fred Trapp of Freeport.
