Chicago forecast cloudy with possible showers tonight or Friday and warmer tonight. Iowa expects partly cloudy skies tonight and Friday with warmer conditions in the east and colder in the northwest. Sunrise at 7 28 a m and sunset at 4 34 p m.
William Bell, famed animal trainer known for handling the man-killing elephant Rajah, collapsed and died here last night of heart disease. The Associated Press reports Bell, a respected figure among circuses nationwide, was pronounced dead after his collapse in Kansas City, Missouri, on December 26.
Closing Board of Trade quotes show May wheat at 1.07 107, May oats 53 1 4, Jan pork 12.47, Jan ribs 7.66, Jan lard 6.67. Chicago Union Stock Yards lists cattle 26,600 with losses, hogs 37,000 down, sheep 16,000 strong. Chicago board figures include scattered openings and highs, lows, and closes for wheat, pork, lard, ribs, and hogs.
A holiday operetta style musicale will be held Saturday afternoon December 28 at the Masonic temple. Soloist Miss Nettie Keator from First Presbyterian Church will perform with Mr and Mrs Edwin Rotzler and Miss Edith Burrell as assistants. Tickets priced at 25 cents are available at local bookstores.
Friends report Mrs. Graham wife of the Sec ond National bank cashier remains seriously ill after a month of declining health. Dr Edwards from Chicago arrived to advise local doctors. Robert Redlinger fractured his right thumb in a basketball practice game last Tuesday night keeping him from play for several weeks. William Koehler post office letter carrier shows improvement but remains weak after a serious illness.
Two prisoners, the Dillon girl and a young man jailed recently for stealing apples, spent Christmas in the county jail awaiting trial. They were given the sheriff’s traditional Christmas dinner as part of the holiday observance.
Mr and Mrs Simon Ottenhausen of 237 Douglas Avenue are the parents of a baby daughter. Mr and Mrs George Ackerman of 7 Winneshiek Street are the happy parents of a baby boy. Both families celebrate the arrivals in this small city notice.
Miles Rose M. Bacher of Martin town Wisconsin and Charles L. Buss were married this morning by Judge Chirity. The ceremony was performed in a local courthouse with judge Clarity noted in the record.
The Cathy Journal is delivered to tay part of the city for 10e¢ a week.
Christmas in Freeport featured broad charity and joy as churches sold tree lightings and Sunday schools offered programs. Merchants reported higher holiday trade than 1906 amid mild weather and crowded public spots, while Rev H M Moore was absent due to his father’s death.
Patients at White sanatorium moved to the large parlors decorated in red and green for a festive Christmas program. Gifts were distributed after the musical event. On Wednesday, fifty people including several company stockholders share the annual sanatorium Christmas dinner in the large dining room.
Christmas night at Germania hall featured a Christmas tree and Santa for children, dancing for youths, and season greetings for all. Nearly every member of the society and families attended, making it one of the largest and most successful parties in its history with Gilbert orchestra providing the music.
Tuesday evening employees and players at the Bijou attended a Christmas supper hosted by owner A J Shimp on stage after the final show. About twenty sat to the meal and festivities continued into the night. A collection funded a suitable Christmas gift, a Masonic emblem ring with inscription.
Post office staff cheer the end of a busy season as Christmas mail volume surpasses prior years and clerks and carriers finish daily work each night before leaving.
The mayor was warmly remembered by city employees who presented a tea set from the fire department and a davenport from other departments. He distributed forty large turkeys in return to the workers.
Supervisor John Bauscher distributed gifts at the poor farm and visited St. Vincent's orphanage, where gifts were also given to children. A graphophonie concert followed the charitable events.

Ben A. Janssen, employed at the BE and W Clothing house for seven years, has resigned and will sue enter the Wim Walton Nephews clothing store. He is on vacation this week and will begin his new duties after the first of the year.
Miss Vina Eichiert of Mellenry county and Theodore Bertness of Brodhead Wis were married this afternoon by Judge Heard.
Three fires in one night tested Benton Street area. Mrs J J Sweeney suffered serious burns when a candle set fire to a Christmas tree at the home of former Police Chief J C Sweeney at the corner of Iroquois and Kickapoo. Earl Grave saved lives by smothering flames with a rug. loss estimated at 75 dollars.
A candle fell from the Christmas tree onto a cotton covered table at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wim. Wagner, Jn, 214 Berton street on Christmas night. The flame spread quickly through the parlor but the blaze was extinguished before firemen arrived. Mr. Wagner sustained minor injuries and about 60 dollars in damage occurred.
A second blaze struck the West Freport shoe factory on Tuesday evening after a previous fire at the barn the night before. Firemen fought it for an hour and a half, while reports of water freezing were denied by crews who blamed mischievous youths for blocking hydrants by dropping stones, delaying water flow to the nozzle.
