Twelve steel arches fail during construction on Wabash avenue, killing several workers and injuring many others. Nine bodies identified, including Edward Murray and Theodore Frank Logan. Rescue and investigation underway. Pittsburg ridge company bears the loss estimated at $25,000.
Sparkill New York August 29 fire at St Magnes convent and orphanage destroyed nine of ten buildings. Loss about 150000 dollars. Four dead Helen Brown Emma Mackin Jane Mary Kate Mccarthy. two missing Therese Murphy Mary Brown. Twenty five inmates injured. Sisters and older inmates praised for heroism. Fire started in lavatory, spread to dormitories, 400 inmates asleep. Reginald led evacuation. boys and staff aided younger children to safety.

A Morris Ill farmer, M. B. Hedges, was swindled at the Chicago railroad station by three men. John Fugazzi posed as a passenger agent then directed him to John Troldahl who sold a worthless ticket to St Paul as Carrington bound and extorted $30. Hedges paid $20 for a plated watch, then $1 for a ride and $2 for guidance. The trio included Troldahl and his brother, Rasmus Troldahl, a broker at 169-171 Harrison St.
Aug 20 Warsaw Illinois funeral services held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the first Presbyterian church for Judge William N. Grover one of western Illinois pioneer lawyers. He practiced with Lincoln Douglas Browning and Bushpel and was 83 years of age.
George Jacob Schweinforth, once leader of the Church Triumphant, has abandoned his faith. His followers will retreat with him as they pursue religious science and his aim to become a Christian Scientist.

Aug 29 New York reports an insurgent dispatch from Santiago de Cuba signed by the Agent of Jiminez stating a revolution is successful and that insurgent activities are advancing in the Dominican Republic amid tense regional events.
General Juan Isidro Jiminez, aspirant to the presidency of Santo Domingo, arrived at Santiago de Cuba with his two sons aboard a south coast boat but was not allowed to land. He complained the authorities barred interview with reporters, alleging press misrepresentation. A crowd of Dominican sympathizers tried to board the steamer to salute him but were repelled.
Dardanelle Ark Aug 29 a party of eight African Americans including Mrs Calvin Jackson and two children Mrs John Smith with three children and Louis Price were crossing the river in a skiff when it capsized and all were drowned the incident occurred seven miles below the town as the crew could not recover any bodies.
In St Louis on August 29, Samuel W. Fordyce and Webster Withers, receivers of the Kansas City Pittsburg and Gulf railroad, obtained a federal restraining order from Judge Thayer against a dozen railroads. The order bars them from boycotting the complainants' line.
