In Birmingham on August 29 two enlisted men of the Sixty-ninth New York Volunteers were killed instantly when a Louisville and Nashville passenger train derailed near the city while en route to Huntaville. The wreck occurred ten miles north, after the engine and tender jumped the track, sending five cars down an embankment.
