Rowland Strong, an English newspaper man, testified that Esterhazy confessed writing the bordereau but claimed documents were betrayed to Germany by Dreyfus. M Gobert of Bank of France testified Esterhazy wrote the bordereau. Bortillon, an anthropometrist, presented charts aiming to prove Dreyfus authored the bordereau while technical testimony drew little attention.
Mystic Conn Aug 25 Special William Lloyd Garrison told the Peace Union that the Spanish were brave foes in the war with Spain and that Cubans lack capacity to govern themselves He urged President McKinley to resign rather than wage the war he opposed.
Lady Nestor the Grant owned trotter shows speed to burn with two straight heat wins in the 2:29 trot after losing the first heat to Birdell. Eddie Nolan, noted teamster, drove the mare to a 2.262 mark in the second heat.

President McKinley and Mrs McKinley with Vice President Hobart and Mrs Hobart and Attorney General Griggs arrived this morning from Plattsburg at Norwood Park Hobart cottage. The greeting was enthusiastic as the party was driven to their lodging.
Reports of riots in Santiago are denied by Brooke and Wood while Gen. Otis cables that the transport Ohio has arrived at Manila with two companies of the 19th infantry and 500 recruits.
The California regiment arrived by transport this morning and marched to the Presidio. They were enthusiastically acclaimed by San Francisco residents and about 100,000 visitors from across the state witnessed the event.

Excourneron Il Aug 24 report shows widespread ptomaine poisoning from pressed chicken across Tazewell county and near McLean county. Sixteen threshers were poisoned near Deer Creek with several in danger, eighteen threshers and three women at Carlock affected, wife of J F Smith in danger, and ten threshers harmed at C Kennel near Yuton. Atmospheric conditions blamed for the tainted food.
Byron Aug 24 The eighteenth annual reunion of Ogle county old settlers drew about 5000 attendees. Chief Justice Cartwright of the Illinois Supreme Court spoke, noting his father Rev Peter Cartwright’s role as a frontier preacher. Congressman Robert R. Hitt warned that U S expansion parallels Seminole War era debates and declared the nation united behind the earlier course. The annual gathering will move to Rochelle next year.
The Old Settlers meeting at Whittlesey's grove near Seward and Pecatonia drew about 2000 attendees with speakers including Hon. Lawrence McDonald and Hon. Robert R. Hitt. Nobles of Tebala Temple in Rockford hold a meeting to plan the fifth anniversary of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Mystic Shrine unit. Birthday falls Oct 25 with a parade, banquet, and large class of candidates anticipated from Rockford and nearby towns. Committees were formed to finalize arrangements and invitations will be issued for the event amid Shriners from northern Illinois.
New York August 24 reports a forty plus bicycle manufacturers trust with $40 million capital faces strong opposition. Eagle Bicycle of Torrington Conn withdraws to operate alone. Several firms claim they are not in and will stay out, while others may be testing terms.
Richard Ormsby, veteran Freeport division engineer for the Illinois Central, visited Monroe on his way home from Orfordsville. Known for fair judgment and integrity, he aided reinstatements after discharge and guided important employee decisions. He once led the mail train through Chicago during the 1892 A R U strike, the sole success in ten days of disruption. Also notes rail earnings: Ann Arbor weekly at 29,848 dollars, up 3,920. Milwaukee and St Paul weekly at 761,130 dollars, up 108,456. Baltimore and Ohio to take West control on Sept 1.
