Coffeen Coal Strike Turmoil and Sheriff’s Arrests

Springfield Illinois August 18. Governor Tanner refused to send troops to Coffeen amid 600 striking miners besieging the town. Sheriff Standle urged for a decisive word. Tanner cited no personal harm or property destruction and ordered peacekeeping by deputies.

Pennsylvania mine resumption befits 64 cent rate

Twenty five large Pennsylvania coal firms met in Cleveland to order immediate restart of Pittsburg district mines citing miners demands as excessive. They agreed coal must be mined at 64 cent rate, with no mining-price changes until 54 cent contracts and uniformity deal are fulfilled. Resumption by force indicated if needed.

Jackson puts on the screws in union injunction

Ex Governor Fleming reports Jackson has broadened an injunction against strikers in the Fairmount region and Loup Creek valley, ordering marches to stop as a form of intimidation. Miners have not heeded, marching at Fairmont and New River while others return to work.

Twin tragedy at 602 Washington Avenue Danville

On Monday night Henry Hammett aged 62 died at 6 PM from opiate effects after his wife died three hours earlier from grief. In Danville Minnesota the couple both perished at 602 Washington avenue.
