In Petersburg Illinois yesterday an unknown man overpowered the jail turnkey at Menard county jail and freed George Hinds a pickpocket and John Brown of Athens serving six months for brass theft. Hinds was recaptured but Brown and the associate escaped. The turnkey was found beaten by a pool of blood by Sheriff O'Dell’s daughter.

The Third Infantry under Colonel Vischer, in full dress, escorted to the Governor’s Mansion where they were reviewed and entertained. Springfield Aug 17 Gov Tanner in Carterville met Sam T Brush manager of St Louis and Big Muddy Coal Co mines. With Col Bennett Captain Barton and Adjutant General Reece present they said keeping soldiers there was necessary and federal authorities would not be asked to patrol the state while militia remains in power.

Fire Destroys Half Block in Greenville Ills

A blaze starting likely from a cigarette destroyed half a block on the west side of the square in Greenville. It wiped out Peter Hentz’s livery stable and spread to Chaffee’s building housing Reed’s barber shop and Gunn’s restaurant, De Mouten’s photograph gallery, and Holde ner’s jewelry store. Losses include De Mouten 2500 on building and 2000 stock, Grafe building 1000, others about 1000 each. jewelry stock and saloon stock spilled into the street. State health board wins skirmish against Dowle church

In Chicago on August 17 the state board of health won a preliminary skirmish in its war against Dr Dowle and his Christian Catholic church. Justice Everett fined Mrs Henrikka Bratsch 100 dollars and costs for practicing medicine without a license after she treated Mrs Annetta Flanders who died under Dowle's divine healing method.

Morgan and Boman Held on Mine Interference Charge

Ebenezer Morgan and Roy Boman of Murphysboro faced Judge Allen after being charged with violating Judge Aten’s order restraining interference with the St. Louis and Big Muddy Coal company mine at Carterville and with assaulting Sam T. Dayton murderer Bruno Kirves executed by electricity

Bruno Kirves, condemned for murder, was executed by electric chair at the Ohio Penitentiary annex in Columbus this morning at 12:21. He remained composed to the end and quipped that it would be sweet to live, but he was prepared to die. The procedure was reported as without incident and very successful.
