Removal of Shafter's army moves north from Santiago

Active preparations underway to shift Shafter's army north from Santiago Cuba with the first convoy expected Saturday. The initial units include Third Sixth and Eighth regular cavalry and Rough Riders. Chaffee's brigade follows, then volunteers in order: First Illinois, First District of Columbia, Test New York, Ninth, Second Massachusetts, Eighth Illinois, 83d and 84th Michigan. Sick or infectious cases stay behind. strict precautions for safe arrival north.

The Ninth Illinois Infantry started this afternoon for Jacksonville. The New Directory will be out tomorrow. S. S. Jourden elected Sunday school superintendent to succeed J. F. Hie line. A barn fire in Mayer Seeley addition destroyed the structure and contents. An effort to enforce the 1881 dental license law is underway in Chicago, with thousands of dentists previously noncompliant.
