Workingmen Favor Free Silver in Alton Shops Ballot

In Bloomington Illinois on August 2 a canvass of Chicago and Alton shop workers asked whether they favored free silver or the existing standard. Car shop results showed 14 for free coinage and 1973 opposed. blacksmith and machine shops recorded 27 for free silver and 400 opposed, with 200 voting. The canvasser sought only an honest expression of opinion.

Montgomery dispatch reports a quiet election day with fair weather and a large vote. Indications point to a close legislature between Populists and Democrats. Democratic candidate for governor Johnson claims a 40000 vote majority, with no disturbances reported up to noon.

Illinois Central Restores Old Wagh Scale On Southern Purchase

Illinois Central starts its new southern purchase by restoring the 10 percent wage cut that was imposed about three years ago by the receivers of the Chesapeake, Ohio and Southwestern. The move comes as the railroad assumes control and begins integration of operations in Louisville. The wage restoration affects existing employes as management acts to normalize compensation under new ownership.
