Washington April 25 Special The senate committee on military affairs finds no defects in the volunteer army bill and will not amend it Theodore Roosevelt will be lieutenant colonel of a regiment he will raise Secretary Sherman resigns and Judge Day is chosen to succeed him The president refers his message to foreign affairs and urges a joint war declaration while the House declares war without delay Sherman’s resignation takes effect soon
The War Department called for state quotas of volunteers. Illinois will send seven regiments of infantry and one cavalry unit, while towns will supply three infantry regiments and two light batteries. The call came from Washington on April 25.
Loypox April 25 Special. A formal notice is expected tomorrow declaring that ships of belligerents must depart British ports within twenty four hours.
Special dispatches report John Sherman, serving as secretary of state since McKinley’s cabinet formed, tendered his resignation effective today. Judge Day of Ohio may succeed if nominated and confirmed. Hitt discussed but ill health prevents. Day at home in Canton, Ohio awaiting nomination. Spain tires of royalty seeking a new peacetime mood.
A crowd of twenty thousand Republicans signed an address to Castelar claiming congratulations on his recovery from illness. In truth they offer support for him to declare a republic. The move signals political maneuvering within the party.
The war revenue bill will not be reported to the Senate until Tuesday and is not expected to pass until late in the week. It declares a state of war with Spain since April 21 and authorizes the president to use land and naval forces to enact the act. The House passed the bill without amendment and it now goes to the president.
A war vessel with four smoke stacks was seen passing Block Island this morning and headed for Newport. It is believed to be the Columbia. Later the Columbia arrived this morning confirming its presence.
Marriage plans for Miss Lizzie Bowen and Ludwig Miller announced as forthcoming wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Heinze of Dakota visited today. Nels Sweeley of Winslow arrived this morning. Rev Byers and daughters visited from German Valley. Miss Leah Harting accepted a job at Karcher's grocery store and invites friends to call.
Spanish guns fired at the American flag during a night in Mantanzas harbor, aimed at the torpedo boat Foote as she took soundings. The shot missed, causing no damage. Sampson's fleet near Havana harbor shows poor marksmanship.
