An 1840s Whaling Duel Over Billiards and Harpoons
The tale recounts Captain Zachariah Lovett of New Bedford who, after a Demerara coffee house quarrel, accepts a duel with Captain Bigbee. Lovett selects a harpoon as awe-striking weapon, paralyzing Bigbee at eight paces. Bigbee abandons the field, ending his dueling career and his military service amid public ridicule.
