Canal Commissioners Report on Erie canal enlargement revenue
Extracts from the canal commissioners report estimate ten year revenue gain from Erie canal enlargement. They project higher rate merchandise growth, 50 percent transport cost reduction, and savings driving broader tributary territory into Michigan Ohio Indiana Illinois and beyond. They foresee substantial state benefit and a single half of prior transport costs with tolls, plus potential further increases even without enlargement. Five men die attempting to reach Canada shore during river ice, with one body recovered. A notice invites Lodi residents to plan an Academy at a meeting April 27. Other notices advertise coffee and spice manufactory growth and local surveying and seed sales.
