State Normal School sits near the Delaware Water Gap and Pocono region offering normal, music, art, drawing, water color, and preparatory courses. Free tuition is available under a new state law with the boarding rate of 5.50 per week, plus planned improvements include a gymnasium electric light plant and a new inspection hall with recitation rooms and dormitory renovations.
About 500 strikers gathered in Upper Lehigh and Freeland areas after eight to ten nonunion engineers and firemen deserted. Police and company officers met the advance group on Main Street and routed them, while a larger force of pickets kept roads guarded to Upper Lehigh. A smaller wing dispersed, and the main body later returned to their homes with no injuries or major clashes reported. Separate county incidents saw deputies guarding homes, blasts of dynamite found, and nonunion workers attacked or threatened in Plymouth Nanticoke and Wilkesbarre areas.
Governor Stone ordered the Ninth Regiment from Wilkesbarre to strike in Luzerne County this afternoon. Freeland Company G men head to Hazleton by trolley. Sheriff Jacobs asked for troops at 145 AM, citing unrest and inability to maintain peace, but the governor delayed action to assess Wilkes-Barre conditions.
A weekly coal presidents meeting in New York discussed the strike. John Markle of G B Markle & Co met with J P Morgan, denying that no licensed miners had returned. A local UMWA union pledged not to return to work until John Mitchell orders.
Evan Moses and son in law A G Fetterman spent part of the week in Philadelphia for eye tests at Wills hospital. Doctors found hemorrhages causing blindness in one eye and diminished sight in the other, offering no treatment. Friends regret the lack of relief from experts. Thomas P McAndrews to remain as business manager of Freeland Brewing Company after withdrawing resignation.
District Attorney McLaughlin and Coroner Gillars of Schuylkill county ordered exhumation of Patrick McDonald of Girardville, buried last week after being found with injuries likely from a train. foul play suspected. Other items note political nominations, a constitutional challenge to mine inspector law, Ballot Reform Party claims, the Allentown fair opening with large exhibits, Socialist nominations, a Shenandoah strike and arson arrest, and Merkt's ice cream promotions.
No new developments in the sensational abduction case. Miss Mabel VanHorn claims she was taken Sunday night and held until Monday morning. Her father James VanHorn and her brothers conducted a thorough search for the abductors but have found no trace. Some doubt her story, though no proof is offered.
Attorneys and witnesses in the murder case of Thomas Smith and Lewis Dinn, charged in the April killing of Michael Choro, traveled to the county seat. Defendants are represented by Daniel Kline, George T. Brown of Freeland and John M. Garman of Nanticoke, with John M. Carr assisting the commonwealth. Local interest runs high.

John MecGarey named manager of East Stroudsburg normal school football club with James Shoylin as left end. Earlier games saw the first and second teams of the ood Wills win 10 to 0. Clifton Shamrocks beat Freeland Juniors at Tigers park 10 to 5. Crescents meet Red Wills at Tigers park Saturday.
Personal James O'Donnell and family left Coxe abili tion for Bayonne New Jersey. Misses Cora Oswald and Bertha Rud zell of Philadelphia visit the Oswald family. Candy Gallagher of North Ridge street left yesterday for a New Jersey position as Miss Mary Stahlings visits Allentown. Miss Kate Doggett returned from Philadelphia. Miss Rose Gillespie visits county seat friends.
