Mitchell Day 80 named in honor of John Mitchell national president of the United Mine Workers of America was celebrated today by local unions across the anthracite region. Parades formed in Freeland Hazleton Wilkes-Barre Scranton Tamaqua Shamokin and other towns with speeches by prominent labor leaders. Over 8,000 marched in Hazleton and Wilkes-Barre sections and the day featured marches bands and drum corps as workers on strike and those who returned joined the observance.

Desertion case charges Shenandoah man in Pottsville jail
Private John Pock of Shenandoah is jailed in Pottsville for desertion from the U S army. He had worked as a freeman at Lewis & Co colliery Park Place during the strike after deserting. Captured by Shenandoah police in a hay loft at Ringtown, he will be sent to Rhode Island for court martial and faces a year or two at Governor's Island in New York harbor.

The Anthracite Coal Strike Commission held its first meeting and outlined a speedy plan of investigation. Chairman Gray urged fast filings as the bases for study. Tomorrow the Scranton session will start inspections into miners living conditions with miner and operator representatives present. The commission refused an operators’ offer of a special train, choosing to cover all expenses itself to remain impartial. John Mitchell of the United Mine Workers will represent the miners though operators object to his union presidency. the panel noted this issue will be an important arbitration point.

Tombstone From Japan Sent To Plymouth For Grave
A letter to C. D. Boyle of Plymouth reports Rear Admiral Barker says the US ship Buffalo brought a tombstone from Nagasaki for his son James Boyle who died there. The body was shipped home, so the stone will be sent to Plymouth with the Baby Carriage. Salt in bath water is advised for cleaning a baby carriage.
