From Scranton an official notice says the Anthracite Coal Strike Commission plans to curb delays caused by the operators lawyers introducing irrelevant testimony. Mitchell has testified five days with cross examination limited to union recognition and conditions at collieries. Non union miners seek a 20 percent wage rise and longer hours in a 2000-strong claim as hearings proceed with strong public interest.
The petitioners demand freedom to work unlimited hours and seek at least 60 cents per ton for all coal mined. They protest any wage or condition agreement with the United Mine Workers, claiming such a pact would ruin their livelihoods and invite favoritism and boycotts.
A twelve member committee representing Coxe Bros. & Co. strikers met with Superintendent L C Smith at Dlifton to relay the company’s demand for minimum terms. The union’s response goes to President Stearns and other officials, with a reply promised by evening after review by District 7, U M W officers. Frank Pardee of Pardee collieries presented a modified firm demand, sent to National President Mitchell, shaping the next move in the dispute.
John Grecian Gallagher formerly of Dlifton and now of Mt. Carmel was discharged from White Haven sanitarium after three months of treatment for lung trouble. He gained twenty pounds and is much improved. He departed for Hazleton to enter Miners hospital for an operation to relieve pain from his crippled leg. The patient has many local acquaintances.
By order of the orphans court the real estate of the late Jonathan Roberts on Birkbeck street will be sold at public sale tomorrow at 10 a.m. on the premises. A 46 by 128.5 foot plot with a two and a half story double dwelling, barn and outbuildings is offered. Desirable location, good condition, likely to attract investors. Terms are 250 dollars cash and the balance on deed delivery.

At a union meeting in Shamokin the response from Lehigh Coal and Navigation Superintendent Zebner was read regarding reinstating former workers. The firm will take back all ex employés except those deemed riotous or enemies of the company. George W. Brown of Uniontown petitions Governor Stone for discharge from the National Guard after union action against him for working in a brewery and boycott during the anthracite strike. Bryan Cumminngs, part of a burglary gang, was found guilty for a July 11, 1901 hotel break in Pottsville suburb. Judge Shay sentenced him to nine years.
