The first formal session of the Anthracite Coal Strike Commission convened in Scranton at 10 a m with 10:00 to 12:30 and 2:00 to 4:30 sittings. Judge Gray outlined procedure as President Mitchell and miners’ team prepared a 6000 word opening statement and testimony readiness anticipated over two weeks.
The prisoner was remanded to the jail to await sentence. The trial of Ignatz Sbukis, the third defendant, was then set down for Monday next, and at its completion Tom Chek, the fourth man, will be called upon to face the jury. James Horn of town wed Miss Mary J. Woodring of Oakdale at the bride’s home with Rev. J. B. Kerschner officiating. The couple will honeymoon in Philadelphia then reside at Upper Lehigh. Elmer Walck and Miss Clara Wersinger of Butler Valley married at the bride’s home with friends present and a later celebration. John Conley of Jeddo wed Miss Minnie Maloney of Hazleton at St. Gabriel’s Church with plans to live in Jeddo. Engagements announced for Louis Switzer and Annie Goeppert of Walnut Street, with a ceremony set for the 25th Inst.
The funeral of the late Owen Fowler will be at 2 tomorrow afternoon with Rev FB Marshal conducting at the residence. Members of several societies will attend in body and others will send delegations. Rev E T Swartz conducted services this afternoon at Hazleton for William Wayne, a former resident who died in Philadelphia. The deceased was a member of Crifton PS of A camp. The funeral of Mrs Edward White was this morning from her home to Highland. The remains of Mrs Charles Goersch were interred at Freeland cemetery this afternoon.
